The story behind the wings
Meet Jim Fogarty.
A lifelong aviation enthusiast sharing the freedom and wonder of flight in southwest Florida.
Where it all began
It started with an airplane.
At eight years old, while on vacation in Fort Lauderdale with his mother Gloria and Aunt Irene, Jim Fogarty fell in love with airplanes after seeing a Lockheed Constellation up close.
The Constellation marked the end of an era of piston-driven airliners before jets arrived in the 1960s. For Jim, it marked the beginning of a love affair with flying that has continued ever since.
By sixteen, Jim was taking flying lessons and spending time at the Youngstown Airport. Working alongside airplane mechanics also taught him the value of proper, regular maintenance—a lesson that stayed with him.
Student reviews
Words from the cockpit.
“Jim is an amazing flight instructor with extensive knowledge. He is an amazing teacher and it seems like he lives and breathes flight instructing. Doing my checkride after my training felt super easy because I felt thoroughly prepared for anything — and I passed first try. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone looking to fly in an amazing plane and with someone who cares about your progress.”
“Jim is a great instructor. He is a wealth of knowledge and experience. I got my private pilot license with Jim in 2020 and my IFR rating in 2022. At over 1,000 hours, I still fly with Jim for recurring training. As a student, I most valued his attitude — always chilled, patient and dedicated to his student’s learning experience. As an additional bonus, Jim is an outstanding person and has become a lifetime friend.”
“I did flight lessons and worked on multiple ratings with Jim Fogarty years ago, and he was hands down the best flight instructor I ever had. I’m currently an ATP flying professionally, and most of the things I learned from him still go through my head today. He is very instrumental in helping you excel and be the best pilot you can be while making it fun at the same time. Would recommend Fogarty Flying Service over and over again!”
